“They just don't want to feel like the court is making them waste their time.”
Excerpt from an interview with Giana, a person called for jury duty at the Hall of Justice in San Jose, CA. Summer 2021.
Interviewer: […] So, thinking about your experience, you know, when you were in court a couple of days ago, if you could change the court system, what things would you change about it?
Giana: I mean...like, don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for the court system. I think our court system is pretty good. I think it's just, more than anything, especially since we have technology and, you know, like, it would be very easy to have us on all on Zoom just waiting instead of having to be there physically. Like, I know a lot of people who I was talking to --like, jurors --um, we were just talking amongst ourselves that there were like a lot of things we had to do. And we were like, we don't mind, obviously, because it's our civic duty to be here. But if we could just like, not have to be there physically and feel like we're wasting our time, I feel like that would help us a lot. And that would help the court, like a lot, because in that case, people would be more willing to be there. Because everybody doesn't mind being there. Everybody wants to do their civic duty. They just don't want to feel like the court is making them waste their time.
